Workshop on Transdisciplinary approach
Date: 3rd & 4th July 2008 Time: venue_time Venue :
Details: Disability management has been a widely debated issue all over the world. With the World censes on disability on rise, better service delivery models need to be invented to reach wider populations and to be effective. Vast majority of health care education in our country is one-dimensional, i.e., focused on one discipline, practised by practitioners of the same discipline. In an effort to address this one-dimensional view of health care education, MAPLE a Transdisciplinary model of practice was developed.Transdisciplinary approach is a model of rehabilitation advocated for the management of children with special needs including complex disabilities in countries like US, Europe& Australia. The underlying concept of this approach is the integration of expertise of various professionals (SLT, PT, OT, Psychologist, Nurses, and Parents etc) so that holistic service can be provided by a single team transcending the boundaries of various disciplines. The model of rehabilitation widely used in many settings, is that of multidisciplinary rehabilitation where inputs are provided from various individual specialists who work in set boundaries lacking cross disciplinary expertise thus leading to limited gains. Hence a Transdisciplinary model promises to provide better solution to this problem and can be better understood by the following example.

Maria is an 8 year old girl with Downs’s syndrome. She drools and presents with unclear speech. She exhibits difficulties with dressing, feeding & travelling independently. Maria also presents with poor gait and coordination. Maria was treated independently by various professionals prior to being with us and showed minimum improvement in her deficits. Maria just needed an appropriate programme which would encompass and meet all her needs! -Sensory processing skills to improve posture in her body, muscle tone in her mouth and hands (Occupational Therapist). Developing her balance and fitness through exercises is an adjunct for posture stabilization (physiotherapist). Referral to the Transdisciplinary team was forwarded. Maria soon, showed rapid stride and was able to sit on the chair and attend to a task and follow instruction. This enabled the speech therapist to effectively work with her to improve her respiratory support, feeding and in future her articulation skills. Being focused-on by an efficient team, Maria today has blossomed into a beautiful girl beaming with great level of self esteem and confidence managing her self care skills independently. She attends integrated schooling and is able to write her own notes with adapted pens and slant board. Her teachers and parents take great pride in all the hard work and effort exerted by Maria with the team all along.
With the intention of bringing this modern approach to light, a brainstorming comprehensive 2 day symposium on Transdisciplinary approach – will be presented in July 2008 by Mr.Milind Sonawane, Sr. Speech Language Therapist, Ireland & Ms.Sheba Abraham, Sr. Occupational Therapist, Ireland. Both have many years of experience working in India, Asia pacific, Middle East and currently working in Europe. The symposium will target various therapy techniques for children diagnosed with learning disability, autism, cerebral palsy, multiple learning needs. This symposium will also provide practical strategies to parents on various issues of concern.
