We, here at the Mathru Mandir, offer day-care services to individuals with special needs, more specifically, to those afflicted by the Down Syndrome. The variety of support services provided by us includes counselling distraught families, training children to overcome their shortcomings, providing physiotherapy, and speech therapy, and spreading awareness about Down Syndrome etc.

The Mathru Mandir was established in 1984 with just 6 children. Today, it provides services to innumerable children not just from our country but also to those from the Middle East. We have not only grown as day-care centre, but have also achieved milestones, touching lives and making a difference to thousands of children who now find themselves leading a better quality of life.

And yes, without the support of families and professionals who sincerely dedicated themselves to this mission, nothing would have been possible.

Dr. Rekha Ramachandran, the co-founder and the present chairperson of Mahtru Mandir holds a PhD in Cognitive Deficity and Depression in Down Syndrome at University of Madras. Having travelled all over the world, Dr. Ramachandran has kept herself abreast of the developments in the dynamically changing scene of Down Syndrome. Her staff is also kept informed on the latest in Down Syndrome.

Dr. Ramachandran has been solely responsible for having invited over, a team of specialists from abroad to assess and suggest remedial measures for the students at Mathuru Mandir. And not just this, she is a forerunner in the country to have introduced Nutritional Metabolic Therapy for people with Down Syndrome.

The prime force behind the making of Mathru Mandir was Dr. Rekha Ramachandran. She not only bears the distinction of having put in her efforts to create Mathru Mandir, but is also the proud mother of Babli Ramachandran, her daughter, who was born with Down Syndrome. Dr. Ramachandran, though initially grieved her daughter’s condition and the severe drawbacks that this disorder brings with it, took an inspiration from all her struggles and decided to help the other children and parents who were up against the same problem.

Way back in the 1980’s, there were no specific centres for those suffering from Down Syndrome. These people were just grouped with the intellectually challenged and cerebral palsied in special schools for education and rehabilitation. Experts in this field were limited, guidance and counselling was sparingly available, and topping it all, parents with such children did not come out to share their experiences. Help and intervention from abroad, obviously could not be afforded by one and all, and by the time help was actually got, the opportunity to develop the child to the best of his or her potential was lost.

It was under such circumstances that Dr. Ramachandran, decided to help others like herself and Babli and created Mathru Mandir, a place were all the help, as in, the guidance of specialists, allied health professionals and therapists were brought under one single roof.

Mathru Mandir bears the unique distinction of being the only centre of its kind in South India. And not just this, a lot of research programs, specialized out patient services, and early intervention programs are also conducted and co-ordinated here.

Mathru Mandir goes with a vision and a mission.

The vision is to facilitate a nurturing and supporting environment both within the family and in the society for individuals with Down Syndrome and the mission to provide a long term rehabilitative, supportive and therapeutic service for individuals with Down Syndrome.
