Rucha Sunil Shere

Ms.Rucha Sunil Shere special child with Downs syndrome has passed S.S.C. Maharashtra state Board of Secondary School Certificate Examination which was held in March 2011. She is the first intellectually challenged person with Down syndrome from Maharashtra to pass the examination with 58% marks. Rucha was only given concession in Maths. Instead of Maths she appeared for lower maths & work experience. The rest of the subjects were like regular students.

From struggling to get admission in a school to finding special educators, she has worked hard. She tasted success when she scored 61% to top the B.A. Sanskrit class in SNDT College, Mumbai in 2016. Tha propelled her to do her Masters in Sanskrit at SNDT College, Churchgate which she is pursuing now. She wants to teach people Sanskrit – a language she loves. Rucha is one of those who will make you stop & think twice about what is possible. She attended regular school and college with typical children, completed her assignments, homework, and projects within the stipulated time.

Along with studies she is also interested in Dancing. She has passed 4 levels of Bharat Natyam successfully with A+ grade. She is also a student of Shiamak Daver’s Academy for performing Arts and has passed two levels. It is her determination that helps her succeed.She has performed many solo, group & duet Dances in inter school competitions and in college annual functions and won prizes.

She helps her family in household activities. She travels alone in public transport and has proved that when it comes to being independent persons with Down syndrome can do it with elan.

She has also successfully completed a course in Bakery & food products organized by Khadi and Village Commission, Government of India. This is an open course and not specific for disabilities.

She loves to read books, novels. She has her own library at home. In a world where often people see disability before capability, Rucha has persevered to make her dreams come true. Rucha is a Role model for Society. Persons with disability should not be segregated from society but included in their day to day activities. Inclusion is possible. It is a need of an hour.
