Dr. Surekha Ramachandran and Dr. Priya Chandrasekhar spoke about Down syndrome in India at the Medical Genetics division of the Massachusetts General Hospital on the invitation from Dr. Brian Skotko, a very well known name in the field of Down syndrome. There the Dr. Priya and Dr. Rekha Ramachandran spoke about the History of Down syndrome in India, the evolution of Down syndrome and where India stands today.
Both Dr. Priya and Dr. Ramachandran are passionate advocates for inclusive living for persons with Down syndrome. Their faith that these children can do well in life with early intervention and therapies drives the various programs at the India Federation. They presented the various aspects of Down syndrome in the country, how the diversity in the country is a deterrent in making people understand the importance of early intervention, how they tried to overcome it and the success stories in the country. It was a presentation that was from the heart, as Dr. Ramachandran narrated her stories leaving a positive mark on all those who were present.
The standing ovation at the end was a testimony to their zealous efforts to make life better for persons with Down syndrome in the country.
This is what Dr. Skotko had to say about the presentation:
"Dr. Ramachandran and Dr. Chandasekhar wowed our entire faculty in the Division of Medical Genetics and Metabolism at Massachusetts General Hospital, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. Their message was clear: all people with Down syndrome, no matter where they are born, deserve to have proper healthcare and psychosocial supports. Built with passion and steel-beamed advocacy, the Down Syndrome Federation of India is clearly making this mission a reality for so many."
