Health Challenges

Children with Down Syndrome (DS) have a few common health challenges that have been well identified and reported. Awareness of some of these common health problems followed by continuous monitoring of these challenges will help reduce the adverse effects on your child’s health.

 

Some very common challenges, to name a few, include –

  • Recurrent infections (Skin, bladder and respiratory)
  • Thyroid hormone production in the body
  • Heart defects at birth
  • Hearing difficulties
  • Problems with vision
  • Oro-motor issues
  • Low muscle tone
  • Oro-motor issues
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Issues with the digestive system
  • Foot arch challenges

DS is a condition so there is no cure, but, careful management of health challenges can have a big impact over the quality of life of your child.
