Down Syndrome Health Camp at Pondicherry
On the 9th of March, a special health camp for individuals with Down syndrome was organized by the Down Syndrome Federation of India (DSFI) in collaboration with Satya Special School and Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute at Puducherry. The event saw participation from almost 50 self-advocates with Down syndrome. The camp featured medical specialists from various fields, including Paediatrics, Orthopaedics’, Dentistry, Psychiatry, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Eye care, and ENT, who evaluated the participants and offered solutions to their specific health concerns.
Dr. Surekha Ramachandran, President of DSFI, played a pivotal role in transforming the perspectives of many parents, leaving them more confident in their children’s abilities. Doctors, interns, and senior postgraduate students gained valuable hands-on experience, enhancing their understanding of Down syndrome and its unique medical needs.
The hospital graciously offered free scans and tests during the camp, and there was a strong commitment from the institution to continue providing services for individuals with Down syndrome in the future. Dr. Karthikeyan, who led the initiative, ensured that all participants, including parents and self-advocates, felt comfortable and supported. The event was a resounding success, offering a fulfilling experience for everyone involved.
