On January 28th, 2025, the Down Syndrome Federation of India (DSFI) hosted an unforgettable awareness event at Sri Balaji Dental College and Hospital in Chennai, showcasing the remarkable talents and determination of individuals with Down syndrome.

Despite the lift being out of service, several self-advocates with Down syndrome walked up three flights of stairs, demonstrating extraordinary grit and perseverance. Their determination set the tone for the event, where they performed with confidence and energy, overcoming any obstacles in their way.

The event featured a variety of performances, including an invocation dance by Ms. Babli Ramachandran, one of the older self-advocates. Alongside her, participants displayed their talents through yoga, dance, and Silambam, an ancient Indian martial art. These performances highlighted their strength, discipline, and creativity, leaving the audience in awe of their abilities.

Speeches from advocates like Ms. Krithika Shivakumar emphasized the importance of seeing individuals with Down syndrome for their strengths, not limitations. Dr. Surekha Ramachandran, President of DSFI, called for greater sensitivity, especially among healthcare professionals. Dr. Anitha and Dr. Badri Thiruvenkatachari shared their commitment to inclusive care, with promises of free dental services and regular awareness sessions.

The event left an indelible impression, reminding everyone that individuals with Down syndrome have much to teach us about resilience, courage, and the power of inclusion.
